let's go blazers!

Portland made the front page of the ny times sports section! Oh, wait it's about how bad the blazers are sucking of late. Whatever karmic alchemies were put in place to get the current roster the bill has apparently come due. A mish-mash of non-function and various maladies across players, coaching, owner - ranging from the severe (bladder cancers, lymphomas) to the season-ending (oden) to the season-arresting (outlaw, batum) to minor annoyance (aldridge, fernandez). Oh yeah, plus nate mcmilllan had surgery on his achilles tendon. Quite a turn from last season but you never know. It's early

blood-brain barrier

An article in the ny times addresses a new approach to brain tumors - spraying cancer-killing drugs directly on to the tumor. one problem is the breaching the blood-brain barrier but that technique was perfected by a DR at OHSU. Awesome. Obviously at the starting line but getting there.

former city commissioner and current us rep earl b makes the ny times we'll be in DC next wk and were already planning to drop by and see him. this kicks up the excitement a notch or three

all oden, all the time

and so starts another nba season, w/ prospects looking favorable for the trailblazers. it's not just oden - you can't merely plug in talent and expect miracles - it's everyone and everything: roy, lamarcus, nate, the fans, portland, and the abiding sense of what this article calls 'citizenship' among the players. things feel warm and fuzzy. or at least approaching warm and fuzzy.

game tonight is in LA. first game at the rose garden is friday, halloween night. happy to say that we will be in attendance w/ my dad. bring it.

the future

on saturday the ny times wondered about the approaching nba season, in particular to the advent of greg oden and what he means to the trailblazers. nice to see some love in the press for portland, and to see shoutouts to lamarcus aldridge, travis outlaw, and martell webster. brandon roy praise is to be expected. interesting that oden is technically playing his rookie year this yr. also interesting that the playoffs seem to be a given.

albert street

portland on the front pg of the ny times this am discussing
gentrification and race. unfortunate captions refer to alberta street
as 'albert'. oh well.

update: they've fixed it online

and this story about monkeys moving robotic arms, also on the front page. man, i have some big kneejerk problems w/ monkeys being used for science but the repercussions could be enormous. moving things w/ your brain. and stuff

vegan strippery

no combination is quite as satisfying as objectification and tempeh burgers. delicious!

actually, we've been to this establishment in its previous incarnation: pirate-themed vegan food. for real. (the current approach seems a better fit). glad to see it's getting some national press. there are lots of jokes to be made here but i won't make them. you can though...

NY Times & Portland, take 2

twice in one week, this time about the disgraced and 'despicable'
PT Barnum like showman who ran out of town oweing buckets of cash
but who is rising, phoenix-like, in seattle. That is, if you consider the ascension of self-promotion and hucksterism as per se rising. Something about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth but i can't pinpoint exactly what. Part of it is perhaps that i've reached maximum saturation level w/ portland's food culture and those who discuss it.

maybe it's just me though

NY Times & Portland

we cancelled the Oregonian a few wks ago, mostly b/c they're not a good paper [typified by their generally backwater editorials and that specifically ridiculous sunday cover story about an old man teaching his granddaughter how to shoot and kill birds] and have been receiving the ny times, which increasingly seems to have portland on her mind. today there was more love for portland. bikes. culture. etc.
